The Secret Formula For Getting It Exactly Right

Posted in: Uncategorized |

When learning something new we often want to “do it exactly right”

We want to learn a new skill and someone gives us step by step instructions. We follow them and the only pay off to a beginner level and yet we want to arrive at mastership as quickly as possible. This leads us to the biggest human drawback on your path to mastership. We start checking that we did each step exactly right. We go hunting and pecking to find out exactly how it’s done. Rather than simply doing it to the best of our ability over and over we stop until we get answers and “know” exactly how” to do it exactly right.

This often happens with the simple act of first getting relaxed. A common step for learning these days. Perhaps the first time you just did it but never felt anything significant. The rest that followed still seemed hard after all you were still learning it. Yet somewhere along the line you figured that if only you relaxed right the rest would have gone differently.

Why? You’re learning right? So now you become obsessed with learning to relax exactly right. But you never do because you don’t honestly know what exactly right is so you wind up always stopping. Halting your progress on the rest of your learning to get it exactly right.

With learning you need to put everything together the way instructed. And do it over and over and over until it feels natural. All the steps. There is no point in having the first step exactly right because it doesn’t follow that the other steps will simply fall into place. You’ll be researching the next step trying to perfect that and then the next step and then the next and still doubt you have the other step right.

So how do you relax? Let go. Just simply follow the directions as best you can and let go of wanting your experience to live up to your fantasized ideal. You realise your fantasy might be what’s wrong?

To let go try this. Grab a stone, a jagged one if you dare. Hold it really tight, hold that stone perfectly. Notice the tension and pressure in your hand. Now turn your hand over palm facing the ground and let go. Let that stone drop. Notice the difference in the feeling in your hand? All you had to do is, let go and it relaxed.

Trying to get something exactly right is like holding that stone. Relax into the learning by simply letting go, over and over. Keep your expectation higher than you are achieving right now but keep letting go and “just do it. Over and over. And you will see you are getting better each time and you will attain mastership sooner and without the struggle of trying to get it exactly right..

It takes a whole lot less time than trying to find the secret formula for getting any of the steps exactly right. In fact that is the secret formula, let go and do it as best you can, as often as you can, anyway.
