Can you visualise?
As we get tolder our ability to visualise or see with the minds eye seems to disappear. Is there something we can do about it?
Many people complain about not being able to see with the minds eye clearly. Some even say I used to do it when I was younger but now I cannot.
Research has found that many children have an eidetic memory until they develop their language centre. Then the eidetic memory is replaced. Words summarise the images. For example a chair, becomes all chairs and not just a single one in the eidetic memory. Therefore the access to this memory is not enough when communicating chair.
The mind looks for patterns and quickly comes up with the fastest solution using those patterns. A visual memory is too slow and too detailed. We don’t need a detailed image of one chair to identify a chair we need a representation because there are so many different types eventually a chair is a place to park the behind. The details of what it looks like are unimportant because we don’t need to see a chair we know what a chair is.
However there are some advantages to being able to see with the minds eye. Since seeing with the minds eye is slower thinking it allows us to slow down the mind and get in touch with out inner thoughts and ideas. Too often we have ideas but before we have had the chance to grasp them they are gone. By slowing down our mind we have access to these skills. It is also useful for developing psychic skills. Techniques like Remote viewing need some degree of visual skills. As well as slowing down our mind to notice these visual images we take our mind out of autopilot and regain our ability to listen to our other senses. Our gut feeling and intuition becomes stronger.
They are always available to us but we need to slow down our mind to catch this information.
When we reach 40 most adults have lost their ability to see with the minds eye . Research has found this is because this part of the brain is atrophied.
Fortunately for us this is also reversible To regain our ability to see with the minds eye we only need to exercise this muscle using techniques like image streaming. This still seem difficult to do. How can one image stream when one cannot see with the minds eye.
A good place to start is to remember scenes in our memory. Although to many this is not the purpose of image streaming, starting with a remembered scene, when stuck, gets the ball rolling. This still frustrates people because they feel they are making it up without actually seeing a scene in their mind. So to develop the skill of seeing with the minds eye try this technique.
Find a detailed painting. A painting is best because these are not usually everyday images. Pick one with many colours and details it can be abstract since you’ll be describing the painting in detail a landscape or still life is better.
Study the painting for 3 to 5 minutes. Notice the details. Then close your eyes and describe the image out loud into a recorder. Keep going as long as you can then open your eyes and see what you missed. Look at the painting for another minute or two and again describe it out loud, fill in any details. Do this for about ten minutes and then think of some everyday items with your eyes closed and describe them out loud. Can be a chair, a plant, or even a meal. Notice the detail in your minds eye.
When image streaming remember whatever you see in your minds eye will often have a translucent appearance like looking through a hazy or dirty window. It’s not until you start describing what you see that the image is there in great detail.
Play with this five to ten minutes a day and you’ll notice that your ability to see with the minds eye improves in next to no time. Have fun with it and perhaps as a useful side effect you notice your intuition showing up more.
